I am new and just 6 weeks out and am trying to eat as well as I can.  I am trying to stay away from the white starches and was wondering if I can cook with wheat pasta and Brown Rice in recipes and that be ok?  I am on a regular Diet and am not sure of these items.  Just wanting to try a few new recipes...

Check with your Doc or Nut. I am 18 weeks out, and still not permitted to have any variety of rice or pasta. And actually, I probably will never have it, even if I get to a stage where Doc/Nut say okay. I love brown rice, and wild rice. However it is so filling that I fear if I had rice and pasta, then I'd  not have room for my protein. Protein first.
Anyway, all programs are different. You may want to try some "fake" rice and "fake" pasta that are protein based.

Good Luck Ginny!

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

This is one of my favorite fake rice recipes. I make it without meat and use it as a side dish:

Mock Cauliflower Fried Rice

1 head raw cauliflower, (grated to make 3 1/2 cups) (use the food processor!)
1 carrot, grated
3 green onions, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon grated ginger

½ bag coleslaw mix

¼ cup tiny peas

3 Tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon sesame oil
3 eggs, beaten

Olive oil

cooked chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, ham, turkey (Your choice )
In a wok or large flat skillet, heat enough oil to cover the bottom. Fry minced garlic with finely diced white part of onions and ginger about 1 minute. Add grated cauliflower and fry for 4-5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add soy sauce and sesame oil. Stir to mix well and brown a bit. Add coleslaw and keep stirring. Push mixture to one side of pan. Add more oil if necessary and scramble eggs in empty side of pan until done but still moist. Stir eggs and peas into "rice" mix and remove from heat.
Add meat if you want.

Everyone's different, but I personally couldn't tolerate any pasta or rice or even bread until after 8 or 9 months. Every time I had it I vomitted. I would consult with your surgeon/ nutritionist. It's a better choice then simple carbs but the problem here is that those items will inflate in your stomach.

Do the experiment. Put some cooked rice into a bowl of soup. Look at how much that rice will inflate. That's exactly what happens to that food after you eat it, which is why most people can't tolerate it.
